Inspiration - London – 5/11/09

Barbican Centre

This was my first visit to the Barbican Centre in London. I found the architecture in the village some thing I would not have expected in London.

At first glance I saw the area as a concrete jungle. During the time I spent walking around the centre, the first thing that began to stand out was the lack of people rushing around. The contrast of the glass faced buildings and allowing natural plants to grow (although in a controlled manor) give me the feeling of o little oasis of tranquillity hidden any in the mayhem of London.

Brick lane

Seeing the space where I will hopefully hold my final major project exhibition gave me an injection of excitement. Seeing the space as a blank canvas, I could vision all sorts of things going on. Installations, interactive activities, internal constructions, large displays screens all of which I think are possible in this space but may be controlled by budget.

My initial thought is to want am area away from the walls so viewers can walk 360 degrees around my work and hopefully through it. “So come on Santa, iv been a good boy this year”.

This mural is on the external of a building. It reminded me how any material can be used in such a way to form a piece of art.

Tate modern

As it was only a short visit to the Tate modern, I decided to focus on the way in which work is displayed, rather than the work itself. “Sorry” - all artist.

This display by Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno reminds me of a different way of displaying motion files through a projector I first saw in B’ham City cen. Instead of projecting on a canvas / wall from behind the viewer, this way is projected onto a glass plane from in front of the viewer. As a display against a wall I think I personally would rule this method out it regards to cost, but would be very interested as a way of displaying work overhead.

Paul McCarthy

I had to walk through a narrow hallway to enter this dark room. I was surprised when I got to this exhibition by Paul McCarthy (b.1945) – material gestures. The material was controversial, but I found the way it was displayed more interesting. The large room was filled in the middle with projectors displaying on the walls. The viewers were able to walk around the projectors and become a part of the display screen. Although in this instance I don’t think many wanted to become part of this display.

Nb. You try taking photos when your trying not to get caught.

Jill Magid

This installation by Jill Magid – I can burn your face 2008, is one way of adding mood to an area using lighting.

Brief - Print – Dry point

This is a dry point print done by the painter Rembrandt. this piece is titled “Abe angels.”

I am attempting to print a section of a photograph using this dry point technique.

My dry point plate

Inking the plate

Removal of the excess ink. The plate is now ready for printing.

Brief – Animation - Flipbook

Brief - Animation - Flipbook Inspiration

To create a flipbook starting and ending on a given shape (triangle).
The triangle has made me think of a mountain peak, so I want to create a story around a mountain climb.
